Deliver Us: 6 Easy Restaurants around Mount Holyoke College

By Katie Krumeich on February 15, 2013

I spent my first semester at MoHo completely poleaxed by the lack of off-campus restaurants that were easy to get to and tasted great. Though Mount Holyoke has its own list of nearby restaurants, they don’t take into account students without cars, a category into which I unfortunately fall. In that vein, after hours of bus rides and experimenting, here’s six places that serve decent or better food, and deliver or aren’t hard to get to!

Hey, sometimes we all don’t want to leave our dorm for dinner.

Family Pizza & Ristorante

Craving some pepperoni pizza? Dying for some meat lasagna? Order a nice big box of mozzarella sticks ($4.75), meat ravioli ($10.95), and a meat lovers pizza ($16.25 for a 16 piece medium) and you’ll melt with satisfaction. The pasta is good anytime, and I find now when I know I’ll be entertaining a group of friends in my dorm, a pizza from here goes a long way.

New Main Moon Café

An awesome option for Chinese food with all the favorites, including pork lo mein ($7.25 for a dinner plate), fried dumplings ($4.50), and general tso’s chicken ($10.25 for a dinner plate, also available for lunch and as a $8.50 combination plate with a choice of soup, egg roll, or crab rangoon and white rice, brown rice, or pork fried rice). Classic delivery Chinese!

Looking across the road at the line of restaurants next to the admissions office, and wondering which to choose? Look no farther!

I don’t know about you, but a good sushi and hibachi place goes a long way for me. The restaurant has all the usual suspects for sushi and sashimi, California rolls ($4.75), salmon & avocado rolls ($5.75), and then, as per any sushi restaurant, has a selection of delicious specialty rolls, including the 911 Roll with spicy tuna and avocado ($8.95) and the Rainbow Roll, a California roll wrapped with assorted fish and avocado ($10.95). Don’t worry, they have rolls without avocado, I just happen to be an avocado sushi roll fanatic. Don’t like sushi? They also have yummy hibachi (beef, chicken, shrimp, or vegetable), and Won Ton & Egg Noodle Soup ($9.95), which I can personally vouch for.

Food 101

I will preface this with the fact that this is a fancier restaurant, and can be formal and pricey. If you have your Grandma in town, though, as recently happened to me, this is a great dinner option. Only dinner, though. The restaurant isn’t open for lunch. Still, their pommes frites ($7.00) and cavatelli ($23.00) are to die for, and the atmosphere, if you’re used to formal restaurants, is great.

By Bus

PVTA schedules can get you into Amherst and Northampton relatively easily, so if you want to eat way out, here’s two restaurants to try!

If you’re anything like me, sometimes you just want a good burger. Judie’s creative creations include excellent burgers, my favorite being three cheeses & bacon ($10.50), of course, but also many other interesting and delicious possible meals. Their signature meals all include popovers, my favorite of which is turkey “pop” pie ($14.25). It’s all very much comfort food, and you will be comforted.

In Northampton:

23 Main Street
Northampton, MA 01060
Tel.: (413) 584-8666

Another excellent restaurant, Fitzwilly’s serves ethnic American food (cajun included), and never fails to satisfy. Warm up with a crock of Guinness Beef Stew ($5.95), or a delicious order of shepherd’s pie ($13.95). I also highly recommend their burgers, particularly the Mushroom Cheddar Burger ($9.25).
