Questions Employers Should Be Prepared for During an Interview

By Alyssa Laffitte on April 2, 2020

The job interview is an important part of the hiring process. It allows you to make sure the new employees will be a good fit for your company. However, it also allows potential employees to evaluate you and your company, and to determine if the company is a good fit for them. This means the burden is not solely on the interviewee to impress the interviewer. The interviewer must also impress the interviewee. In this article, we will discuss how to prepare for questions interviewees might ask you.

“Does this position offer opportunities for advancement?”

Nowadays, young workers generally do not want to stay working in the same position for an extended period of time. The days of someone working for 20 years, doing the same thing, are gone. If you want to attract fresh, modern workers, your company should offer opportunities for advancement. You should be prepared to answer questions about these efforts during interviews. The entry-level employees you hire now should be able to work their way up to become managers. It also helps to offer professional development opportunities, such as workshops or seminars. This will cause your workers to feel like they are progressing in their careers. In short, be prepared to answer questions about the potential for career advancement.

“What has been your experience working here?”

A potential employee would definitely want to know what life would be like if they worked in your company. Since they have you in front of them during an interview, it’s likely they will ask you about your experience working for the company. Your insight will allow them to envision themselves working for the company, and will help them determine whether or not they are a good fit with the company. As you answer this question, remember to be honest. You want to give the interviewee an accurate picture of life at your company. For that reason, be prepared to answer questions about your experience working for your company.

“What does a typical day in this position, at the company, look like?”

Interviewees might ask more than one question to gain insight into life at your company. In addition to your experience, an interviewee might ask about what their experience might be like. Again, this will help them to get a clearer picture of what their life would look like if they decide to take the job. It will be another factor to help them choose the right job for them. As with the last question, be sure to be honest in your answer.

“Do you have any hesitations about my application for this position?”

This might seem like an odd question for an interviewee to ask, but they want to know about anything that might reduce their chances of getting the job. Your answer to this question will help them determine the next steps they could take if they don’t get the job. More specifically, your answer could pinpoint the areas they could improve when applying to jobs in the future, or even if they choose to apply to another position in your company. For instance, if you tell the interviewee you were concerned about their GPA, they could decide to go back to school for a Master’s degree. In other words, be prepared to answer questions about any concerns you might have with the interviewee’s application.

“What do you expect from someone in this role?”

During an interview, you should be prepared to answer questions about the interviewee’s role. Specifically, you should know what will be expected of them, because they will definitely want to know. When a potential employee knows what will be expected of them at a new job, they will be more equipped to meet those expectations. As you answer this question, be sure to mention the challenges this job might entail, so that they will be prepared for those, too. Like many other questions, this one will allow them to determine if they will be able to do the job. If they won’t be able to meet the expectations, they will know that this job is not the one for them. On the other hand, if they can, they will have more confidence that this is the right job for them.

“In what direction do you see the company going in six months? A year? Five years?”

Potential employees want to know that their job is secure. They want to know the company will be alive for the foreseeable future. For that reason, be prepared to answer questions about the future of the company. You should know about the plans the company has for the near future, and the not-so-near future, as this will assure the interviewee that if they take your job, they will be secure.

As you conduct an interview, don’t forget that the interviewee will also be asking you questions. Be prepared to answer them!
