At least 50 killed at Las Vegas concert in new worst mass shooting in modern U.S. history

A gunman opened fire on concert goers in Las Vegas Sunday, killing at least 50 and wounding more than 400.

“Country music star Jason Aldean was performing Sunday night at the end of the three-day Route 91 Harvest Festival when the gunman opened fire across the street from inside the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino. SWAT teams quickly descended on the concert and the casino, and officers used explosives to get into the hotel room where the suspect was inside, authorities said. The gunman died at the scene and was identified by Clark County Sheriff Joseph Lombardo as Stephen Paddock, 64. A motive was not immediately known,” according to an Associated Press report.

CNN reports that at least 8 weapons were found in the room where the gunman opened fire.

Trump has slammed “fake news” and “politically motivated ingrates” for criticizing his administration’s response to the Puerto Rico hurricane crisis.

USA Today reports that Trump tweeted “’We have done a great job with the almost impossible situation in Puerto Rico,’ Trump said. ‘Outside of the Fake News or politically motivated ingrates… people are starting to recognize the amazing work that has been done by FEMA and our great Military.’”

These comments from Trump come after a series of tweets on Saturday in which Trump targeted the Mayor of San Juan, Carmen Yulin Cruz, who had questioned the pace of relief efforts to Hurricane Maria-battered Puerto Rico.

Students on the campus in Fairfax, Va. told police that the student may have taken a drug, possibly a “hallucinogenic substance,” according to a report from a local NBC news outlet.

University officials said the sophomore ran through the window at the Potomac Heights Residence Hall.

“Investigators said no foul play was suspected, but they were told other students may have the same substance in their possession and could be at risk. The university maintains a medical amnesty program. If a student has taken the substance and fears for their safety, they can contact the school’s police department for help,” according to News 4.

In other sad news for students in the Washington, D.C. area, a 18-year-old student at the University of Maryland was killed after being hit by an SUV on a busy stretch of highway that has long been a trouble spot for the school.
