4 Job Hunting Techniques That Will Guarantee You a Job

By Alicia Geigel on September 30, 2017

Searching for a job either in or out of college can be not only draining but also equally as stressful. There are several elements to take into consideration when job hunting such as the best sites to visit, creating online profiles, and cleaning up your image online.

With an increase in employers recruiting more and more people online, one of the most important aspects of your job hunt will rely on your online profile. During the process of cutting and updating your resume and juggling writing emails to making countless phone calls, you might be wondering whether or not you are taking the right steps to hunt for the job you love.

Whether you are an upper-class college student looking for internships or a recent graduate immersing yourself into the job world, the key to getting the job of your dreams is to make the best version of yourself and make that shine through to employers. Though sometimes you may feel the job-hunting process to be exhausting, it is important to remind yourself to be persistent throughout.

Looking for some easy tips to help you hunt for the perfect job? Check out my tips below!

1. Build/update your LinkedIn profile

Perhaps the first thing any advisor or mentor will tell you when you are searching for jobs is to make a LinkedIn profile. Considered to be the professional social network, LinkedIn can not only create a greater online presence for employers to see but also give you recommendations for job listings based on your job experience, skills, and connections!

According to Dr. Woody Woodward of Fox Business, “your online presence is typically the first impression with a recruiter or business contact …recruiters will Google you, and you need to be in control of what they are going to find.”

The more you continue to build your profile, the greater chance you will have of being connected with employers and be set up with a job you will love!

2. Download the best job apps

In an age dominated by technology, take advantage of the sources out there and download job search apps onto your phone! This can help you not only keep track of your applications regularly but also make updating your profile and applying for other positions a breeze as you have the job world at your fingertips!

Besides Linkedin, Allison Doyle of the Balance states that a couple of the best free job apps are Indeed and Glassdoor, with the most beneficial being Good.Co. According to Doyle:

“The app users find companies and careers that will benefit their overall well-being, not just their bank account. Through personality quizzes like What Are Your Unique Strengths? and How Do You Come Across to Others?, Good.Co unlocks increasingly nuanced insights about yourself and offers you companies and jobs that might match your personality and working style.”

3. Update and clean up social media profiles

We all are guilty of uploading an embarrassing picture that does not paint us in the best light or tweeting something and instantly regretting it. Everyone makes mistakes, but in the job world, these are the posts that are deal breakers for employers.

In order to make your job hunting process easier and more beneficial to you, go into your various social media accounts like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. and remove any unwanted post or picture on your profile. Then, play around with your privacy settings on each account to make sure that the right people are seeing the posts that float around your social media.

In addition, Andrea Cannon of Wise Bread provides another tip to help clean up your online image, saying, “You can improve your job prospects by making a good first impression right away. Post a recent photo of yourself and make sure your best self is highlighted. A professional looking headshot is best. If you can’t afford to hire a photographer, have a friend take some shots in good lighting.”

4. Maintain an updated resume

One of the most important elements to the job process is your resume. In order to stand out the best you possibly can to potential employers, be sure to constantly and consistently reconstruct your resume.

According to the author of Unbeatable ResumesTony Beshara, stick to simplicity when building your resume.

She said, “Avoid the fancy-schmancy layout, font, and other special effects. Stick to traditional font of Times New Roman, 9 to 12-point size, and black type against a white paper.”

She also suggests avoiding mistakes such as including lengthy personal information as well as dense descriptions of previous job positions. The faster an employer can read through your resume, the quicker they can determine whether they want to proceed with an interview!

The key concept to finding the job of your dreams, along with being persistent, is being patient. Though the two seem to cancel each other out, remember that persistence and patience can go hand-in-hand. Remember that while it is important to follow up with potential employers after the application process, it is just as important to remind yourself that applying for jobs is indeed a journey and can be a slow one in order to find the job that works best for you!

Lastly, remember that a positive mindset can create a positive outcome and as always, good luck!
