Awful College Roommates

College life can be rough in general, but dealing with a difficult roommate can be the difference between  being able to relax at the end of the day or constantly being anxiety written. Here are some humorous classifications of roommates to beware of.

The “BFF”

If you value your personal space, well too bad, the BFF doesn’t. This roommate is desperate for a deep connection and will worm their way into your life whether you like it or not. They will envelope your style, your friends and mimic all of your actions and hobbies under the pretense that the two of you are best friends forever. They will suffocate you to a point where you will actively avoid going to your room in order to achieve some semblance of alone time. Generally devoid of any discernible personality and career aspirations, the BFF will quickly become your clone. Hmm… This is starting to sound an awful lot like the plot of Single White Female. Discretion is vital when dealing with the BFF, for at the slightest sign of exclusion the BFF is prepared with a massive guilt trip.

The Hook Up Queen/King

Hey so remember when you use to have a dorm room? Yeah, those were the days, now you’re basically homeless buming from one friend’s room to another. It’s one thing to be sexiled now and then, but frequently and for days at a time, well now you’re dealing with a hook up queen/king. This roommate is the grand master of the birds and bees and will constantly shuttle strangers into your abode any day at any time. With absolutely no respect for the fact that it’s your room too, the continuous traffic of strangers are people who you’ll most likely never see again or who will consistently lurk around awaiting your roommates return. Unless you set up some boundaries quick, this roommate can be nasty to deal with and make simply existing in your room nearly impossible.

The Dr. Jekyll/Mr Hyde

This roommate has a bad habit of dramatic mood swings that will often leave you confused and mildly frightened. One moment they are happy and friendly and the next they are anti-social and obnoxious. Everyone changes moods or has bad days, but the Dr.Jekyll/Mr. Hyde roommate can be highly temperamental and have dramatic attitude shifts throughout the course of a single day. This roommate can be particularly toxic because it’s impossible to tell when they’ll be their normal self, or when their darker side may make an appearance.

The Super “Geek”

Often good hearted and well meaning, the super geek, however, is the social equivalent to a train wreck. The walls of your dorm room will quickly become lined with fantasy posters, decorated with action figures and then perhaps even adorned with a collection of ancient weaponry. Now a days it seems as though everyone watches anime, reads comics, or enjoys science fiction to some degree; the super geek, however, enjoys these things to an unhealthy extent and thoroughly envelopes them self in nothing else but the realities of their beloved characters. The super geek will regail you with an exhaustive history of each and every one of their beloved fictional characters. While initially quirky and sweet, this particular feature of the super geek can morph into down right creepy if they begin blurring the lines between fact and fiction and start exclusively speaking in the made up language of their favorite fictional race.
