Pillows and Cushions

A great way to de-stress when you are home is to make sure you are actually comfortable. Whether it be your couch, armchair, bed, or kitchen chairs, you spend a lot of time sitting, laying, and reclining there. You want to experience optimum comfort levels. How else can you relax?

If you find you spend a lot of time sitting or working on your couch, be sure to have pillows to help prop you up exactly the way you like for maximum Netflix and chill time. It is a terrible feeling when you are only halfway through a movie but can’t stay comfortable on the couch and are forced to wriggle and constantly change positions. If you like to work or spend a lot of time in your bed, you want to be comfortable too. Perhaps you have a hard time sleeping — go the extra mile and get yourself that really nice down pillow you have always ogled but never dared to get.

Maybe you sleep in a position that is not particularly good for your spine (and you know you should stop, but it is just so hard to do!) — why not try out a body pillow? It can help your body find natural positions that are good for your body and helps you sleep deeper, longer, and better so that you are more relaxed. If you work at a desk or even your kitchen table to do work, you need to make sure your seat is comfortable.

Students spend a lot of time reading and hunched over a computer. You want to make sure your back is braced and you have a pillow under your bottom so it does not get sore from you sitting on such a hard surface. There is nothing worse than sitting in an uncomfortable chair, your hips hurting, knowing that you have several more hours of studying and homework left to go. Save yourself the trouble, stress, and pain — invest in pillows and cushions.

Scents

Another undervalued trick to try and reduce your stress at home is via aromatherapy and scents. We all have scents and smells that can wake up our senses and memories. A certain smell can trigger a happy memory which can keep you calm or even make you happy. There are also specific scents that are scientifically proven to have a positive effect on your stress levels.

Aroma Therapy 4 Soul said, “Aromatherapy … ‘cut[s] straight through’ everything you’re thinking at that moment and which causes you stress, much more profoundly than being slapped around the face to ‘snap you out of it’ — and much more pleasantly, at that.”

There are many ways that you can incorporate these de-stressing scents into your home. There is the traditional route of aromatherapy using essential oils. But you can also light incense, burn candles, and use sprays and other plug ins. Less traditional routes could be growing the plants yourself (as gardening can often be an activity that can help you unwind and de-stress on its own), that way you have access to the scent source whenever you need it and continuously have the scent, fresh, in your home.

You can also get dried herbs and make potpourri to keep around your house or make your own sachets to keep in your drawers, among your clothes, and in your closets. It can help you take the calmness you have established in your own home out of the house with you when you have to go out and face the cold harsh realities of the world. Having your clothing and belongings smell like a specific scent that relaxes you can go a long way.

A list of scents that specifically can help to de-stress you include:
