Tips On Organizing Your Belongings In Storage

By Kylie Exline on July 27, 2016

Organizing your storage spaces effectively is imperative. Without a proper system, it is pretty much chaos with additional stress added into the mix. In other words, organization is key. And without it, we are looking at anxiety levels rising through the roof. Not good.

There are various ways you could go about organizing your storage space, but those ways also include erroneous ways. And we never want to be wrong, right? Right.

So to keep your space organized, continue reading below and actually listen (remember?) to the tips because without them, you will just be another person who has got the case of the poor storage sniffles.

Label separate piles.

When first going into the process of organizing your belongings, you want to go into it clear-headed and ready to label. So have a sharpie waiting. You will basically become a labeling machine who can decide in the span of 2.2 seconds whether an item is worthy to keep, toss, or donate. It will be pretty impressive, I have to admit.

By creating these diverse piles, we will easily be able to know which is which. If that is not clear enough, we want to read a box and know exactly what remains inside the box. The worst is opening up “bathroom” and finding your winter boots. Not exactly what you had in mind I take it.

By going through and applying this labeling process, it is creating less stress (which is always the goal), and truly helps you define which items you consider necessities. Maybe owning three sets of salt and pepper shakers is slightly excessive. Just saying.

If worried about how long this will take you, do what always works: make a game out of it. You can blast your favorite album from the ‘90s, wear knee-high socks, and dribble your clothes in between shots into your separate boxes. If your items are already in storage at the specific time, then you can label after the fact even and decide then.

Buy bins.

To organize your storage space, purchasing bins is a must in all situations. They easily allow you to see what items lie inside, all while not creating havoc on the storage unit as a whole. And we could all use less stress as we know.

You can locate bins at basically any store for a reasonable price. You can find pretty ones, ones that can stack without any issues, and ones that hold a ton of things inside, depending on the actual size of course. Point is, there are various bins that exist out in organization universe.

Bins help you keep organized because they are different than boxes in the sense that they do not have to be as bulky, can have wheels on them, and are clearly transparent. Plus, you can still use said bins in your apartment or house once you are finished with the storage space because they work. Sorry, cardboard boxes.

These bins can have the same organization methods applied to them, which then makes the entire thing easier. The point is to have a coordinated storage space, and that is what you are going to get — as long as you follow these tips of course.

Enact positive thinking.

This may sound unnecessary, but you could not be more wrong — at least not in this instance. Positivity is everything, and without it, there is just negative vibes. Wisdom, I know. You need to keep an optimistic outlook on organizing your storage space because more will work out that way. Truly.

It can already be super stressful when going through the packing process, so being realistic is also necessary. You obviously will be getting rid of a lot of random objects that you own, so preparing for that is best. It is no secret that you will be throwing away certain things and donating others, so try to focus on how that is a great act of giving. It helps.

Going through and organizing your things may feel like it takes an actual eternity, so better start early. Even when you are moving your boxes and whatnot into the storage unit, you want to be hopeful that it will be smooth sailing and nothing will break. Obtain hope, y’all.

These positive thoughts will surely help you out when you start organizing because you will need them in order to not only make progress, but move: literally.

When moving our valuables into storage, it can be difficult because we are unsure of what to pack, keep, and throw away. There are certain methods that you should definitely keep in mind because they will allow the entire process to run smoother.

You want to make sure you label your piles, organize your items into bins, and keep a positive, happy-go-lucky attitude about putting your things into storage. So go buy some duct tape, a lock, and some good music because you have ways to go in the organization world.
