How To Deal With A Roommate

By Kirsten Kimball on May 26, 2016

Going away for college is an exciting and new experience for the ones who choose to do so. It’s a chance to meet new people, try new things, and maybe even meet the one we end up spending the rest of our life with. I think most of us, however, would have to agree that the idea of sharing a room with one or more complete strangers is a bit nerve wracking.

Here are a few tips with how to deal with a roommate.

First we must discuss the different types of roommates. There’s the messy roommate, the loud roommate, the quiet roommate, and the roommate who brings a different guy back to the dorm every night — you get the picture. Now while I do not live on campus I have some experience with roommates.

The Messy Roommate: My boyfriend is a typical guy: messy and just doesn’t care about how clean or organized a room is. I find myself constantly picking up his dirty underwear and throwing away old pizza boxes. So you could say he’s the messy roommate. How do you deal? Discuss with them maybe setting up some sort of chore chart. And if they don’t agree to that, well you can always request a new roommate.

The Loud Roommate: Ah, the roommate that throws dorm parties often which so coincidentally always seem to be when you’re studying because you have a huge test the next morning at 8 a.m. The fix? Set up some sort of schedule. Tell them that you have a major test and would appreciate it if they didn’t throw a raging party at that time. I’m sure they would be more than glad to cooperate … or you can just go to the library.

The Quiet Roommate: I don’t see much of a problem with the quiet roommate who keeps to themselves. But then again, it could be a huge issue. Say your snoring bothers them and keeps them up all hours of the night. If they’re too shy to say something you’ll feel bad. Encourage them to speak up and be open. You guys do live together after all.

And last but not least …

The Sex Addicted Roommate: Okay, let me rephrase that. The roommate who likes to have sex? Anyway you put it let this roommate know you don’t appreciate her bringing random guys back to the dorm and getting down and heavy while you’re trying to catch some shuteye for class the next morning. She’ll most likely be embarrassed or have no shame at all.

I hope this article is helpful in dealing with your new roommate. Until next time, happy rooming!
