Six Things To Do After Graduation
No idea what to do after graduation? You’re not alone.
At first, it was pretty easy to put off thinking about after-graduation plans. I mean, there are tests to study for, papers to write, and that cute lab partner to worry about. There isn’t any time to think about the future! But with just 11 weeks (eek!) left until graduation, now’s the time to get serious. Stop procrastinating. Here are six things you can do after graduation.
Get an internship. Figuring out what you really want to do with that Sociology major might take some hands-on experience. Internships are an excellent way to venture out. Sure, there’s usually not much money involved. But these transient positions can offer much-needed personal insight. Is an office environment truly your scene, or would you rather hang out with kids all day? Careers can be like shoes –don’t settle unless you’ve found the right size.
Work part-time. After roughly sixteen years of academia, your brain definitely deserves a breather. Hit up that local coffee shop with your resume. Working part-time, even if just for a little while, can give you the break you need.
Plus, there’s no harm in saving up for your next adventure.
Apply to graduate school. Today, getting your bachelor’s degree is almost equivalent to having a high school diploma –everybody has it. Give yourself a leg up with higher education. Specialize in your field and have fun studying a subject that actually interests you. You don’t even have to pay. Fellowships and graduate assistantships can be good to your wallet, especially if you move to a new city.
Travel. This is the ideal time. Seriously –you have no kids, no career, and no responsibilities. Book a flight and just go. Couch surfing and hostels can be inexpensive ways to wander the world. Ensure an authentic experience by befriending the locals. You never know who you’ll end up meeting.
Volunteer abroad. Better yet, volunteer abroad. Many organizations such as World Teach, Young Adults Volunteers (YAV), and World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms (WWOOF) provide food, lodging, and an enriching cultural experience in exchange for work. You can feel good about this travel opportunity.
Absolutely nothing. You’re beat –we get it. It’s been a hard four years of college. Who says bumming it in your parents’ basement isn’t the best option? Enjoy sleeping in and eating out until you’re ready to get back on that work or study grind.
Or, until your parents kick you out.
You don’t have to work nine to five to be a successful college graduate. But seek out your life, or you might just find it passing you by.
