It’s not always easy to buy gifts for your friends who are students. We’re in college — none of us have much money to buy anything luxurious or much of a need for anything that luxurious in the first place.

Many people don’t think about buying apartment goods as gifts for college students, but they’re the perfect way to make a college apartment feel like a home away from home.

However, most college students use rental furniture in their apartments. It’s the smart thing to do; it’s unreasonable to splurge on a piece of furniture that you know you aren’t going to be using for a long time.

Unfortunately, this can often lead to a boring interior landscape.

The question to ask now is: what can you buy for your friends who rent their furniture to help them decorate and spruce up their apartment?

Check out a couple of gifts you can give this holiday season to someone who uses rental furniture!

1. Office organization furnishings

For your friend who is obsessed with being organized, desk organization tools are a great gift idea. Some DIY mason jars for holding loose pens and pencils, a hand-decorated bulletin board that can stick to the wall without putting holes in it or a cute contraption to hold the clutter are perfect for sprucing up a rental desk area for both form and function.

2. Comfy couch cover

Rental furniture, while it does the trick, may not always look the nicest. If you’re looking for the most fancy and elegant couch out there, you may have to look beyond rental furniture … or maybe not. Couch covers are the perfect way to make your apartment or home look nicer while also adding a personal touch.

FSU student Ryan Reilly owns a couch cover and he loves it.

“My friend’s dog ripped apart my couch, so I had to buy a couch cover,” he explained. “Frankly, it made my couch look better!”

3. Trendy throw blanket

A soft, cozy throw blanket is the perfect way to both effortlessly spruce up an apartment and to ensure that your friend is warm and cozy this winter season. Throw blankets are perfect to toss on the back of the rental couch for when people come over to watch movies or to lay on the end of the bed to help guarantee a good night’s sleep.

4. Make it personal

Give a gift that means something. Collect pictures that you have with your friend, pictures of their favorite things, a picture of their pet — whatever you think would make them happy to see. It’s the perfect thing for your friend to hang above their rental dining table to look at if they’re ever feeling lonely.

5. Curtains

While this may seem like a boring gift, the impact that the perfect pair of curtains can have on a boring room full of standard rental furniture is not to be underestimated.

Pick around your friend’s mind a little bit — do they have a favorite color? Is their apartment based off of a certain color scheme or pattern right now? Is there anything that you should definitely stay away from? After you answer a few basic questions, it should be easy to help your friend transform their living room into paradise.

6. Coffee table goodies

You can tell a lot about a person by what they have sitting on their coffee table, rental or not. Do they have any books? If so, which ones? Are there any quirky conversation pieces? Is it filled with scented candles with a flower centerpiece, or is it cluttered with remotes and burger wrappers?

Take your friend’s personality into consideration, and then give them an individualized gift to remember that they’ll love.

7. Scented candles

Speaking of candles, you really can’t go wrong with candles in any space. They give your place a unique and distinct smell that becomes associated with you and your home. Wouldn’t you like to be associated with scents of evergreen or apple crisp?

Furthermore, scented candles can make a previously dingy apartment look much nicer.

“Candles distract from bad furniture,” Reilly declared.

8. Kitchenware

Kitchenware is a great gift for someone who doesn’t own their furniture. It’s something that they can own and take pride in. Pick out a nice collection of pans or a nicely designed set of silverware to help your friend spruce up their life in the kitchen.
