What’s a fun way to get people to do something for a good cause? Add a little competition to it.

According to this press release, Voto Latino partnered with national Latino Greek organizations for the second-ever RepUrLetters Challenge (RepUrLetters).

This is a competition for Latino Greeks across the country to get as many people as they can registered to vote. This was perfect preparation for the 2014 midterm elections, and altogether everyone was able to register more than 1500 voters in 2014.

Voting is very important, and having a fun way to get people registered and to inform them on the importance of voting is a great way to get the youth’s voice heard in the elections.

RepUrLetters covered a lot of ground by combining Voto Latino’s fabulous online voter registration tools and social media outreaches with the networking that the Latino Greeks can provide with their student and alumni networks.

The efforts to get people signed up and ready to vote was through online efforts as well as on-site since spring 2014.

By working with over 16 Latino Greek organizations in 2014, RepUrLetters was able to register voters in at least 31 states, and reached across 750 college campuses, which is awesome to hear. If they could accomplish that in such a short amount of time, imagine how many more voters they will be able to continue to register in the future!

As with any competition, there is always a winner. Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority, Inc, which is the largest historically Latina national sorority in the United States, took the competition home by accounting for 36 percent of the total number of voters registered through the RepUrLetters Challenge, scoring the highest numbers of voters registered. Way to go ladies.

“On behalf of Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority, Inc., we are honored to actively empower the Latino community to vote during the 2014 midterm elections,” said Genevieve Padro, Director of Engagement for Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority, Inc.

These girls are making a change in the community, one vote at a time. But they aren’t stopping here.

“Sigma Lambda Gamma named as the 2014 winners of the RepUrLetters Challenge is only the beginning of our dedication to servicing our communities for positive change,” Padro said. “Our vote is our voice!”

Voto Latino President and CEO, María Teresa Kumar, commented on the capacity of the women of Sigma Lambda Gamma.

“The number of voters registered was certainly impressive, but even more impressive is the capacity the women of Sigma Lambda Gamma have shown to be leaders in their communities,” she said. “We are honored and proud to have worked with them and with fifteen other national Latino Greek organizations to help even more Latinos magnify the power of our vote in the 2014 elections.”

Here’s a little more about Voto Latino: They are a nonpartisan organization that strives to empower Latino Millennials to claim a better future for themselves and their community.

They want to get new voices out there, create a change, and recognize that “Latino issues are American issues and American issues are Latino issues.”
